
Why Your Outdoor Heater Keeps Shorting Out (and How We Fixed It)
Outdoor garden heaters have a tough life. They’re stuck in this brutal loop of getting scorching hot on the inside while fighting off rain and humidity on the outside. Most “waterproof” IP65 heaters don’t actually fail because the whole case leaks. It’s almost always the lead-wire entry point. We see it all the time with cheap units—the seal just gives up, the insulation breaks down, and suddenly you’ve got a short circuit. The heat is the real enemy here. Infrared elements put out a ton of concentrated heat, and that heat doesn’t just stay in the center. It travels right back along the wires. If you’re using basic PVC or cheap silicone sleeves, they can’t handle that kind of abuse. They get hard, they crack, and eventually, they shrink. Once that seal shrinks, moisture sneaks into the housing. In an outdoor setting, that’s a recipe for disaster. It creates a direct path for electricity to jump from the live wire to the metal casing. Not great. How we do things differently. Most companies just throw in a rubber grommet and call it a day. But those things shrink the moment things get hot. We take a different approach. We use high-temp fluorosilicone seals and a precision-molded potting compound. Think of it as a mechanical lock. It doesn’t shrink, even when the heater is cranking at max temperature. We build the seal directly into the wire transition. This means that even if the heater gets tilted or vibrates a bit, that seal stays tight. It just works. One quick tip for installation. There is a trade-off. Because this seal is so heavy-duty, the cable exit is a bit stiffer than what you’re used to. Please, don’t bend the wires at a sharp angle right where they enter the unit. If you force a tight bend, you might stress the internal potting. Just give the cable a few inches of slack and you’re golden. Doing it this way kills off those “ghost” shorts that make cheap outdoor heaters such a headache. Your electrical path stays isolated from the weather, no matter how many times you flip the switch.
