Ever notice how those old-school bathroom heat lamps always seem to die right when you need them? It’s not a coincidence. Most of them just aren’t built for the actual chaos of a bathroom. Basically, they’re built to live in the damp without giving up the ghost. The trick is how they actually heat you. Most heaters try to warm up the air. But in a bathroom, the air is slippery—it drifts away or gets sucked right out the vent. Infrared is different. It sends out waves that hit you and the walls directly. It’s instant. No more standing there shivering in a towel while you wait for the room to “warm up.” You step in, you feel the heat, and you’re good. But here’s the thing: you have to get the waterproofing right. If you put a standard heater in a steamy bathroom, you’re basically asking for a tripped breaker. It’s only a matter of time before moisture hits the terminals. The high-end waterproof units use sealed gaskets and housings that actually keep the water out of the wiring. One heads-up on the power side: these things can be thirsty. They put out a lot of heat, but if your home’s wiring is a bit dated or undersized, you might blow a fuse. Just double-check that your electrical panel can handle the load before you go all-in on a massive array. Putting them in is the easy part. Most of these are drop-in replacements. They fit right into the spot where your old light fixtures used to be, so you don’t have to tear up the ceiling. The only real catch? Placement. Since infrared heat is so direct, if you mount the unit too low, it can feel a bit too aggressive on your skin. You’ve got to play with the mounting height based on the angle of the beam. If you nail the distance, that biting chill of a tiled floor disappears the second you flip the switch.
