
Keeping Your Patio Heaters Alive in the Rain and Fog
Let’s be honest: outdoor bars and patios are absolute nightmares for heating equipment. Between the salt air, the sudden downpours, and those wild temperature swings, most heaters just give up. You end up with burnt-out filaments or a housing that looks like it’s been sitting at the bottom of the ocean. We wanted to fix that. Instead of just slapping a cover on it, we focused on the actual physics of how water and heat play together.
Dealing with the Wet Stuff
Water getting inside is the fastest way to trip a breaker and kill your night. To stop that, we use heavy-duty silicone gaskets and sealed cable entries. It basically turns the electronics into a fortress. But we didn’t stop at the box. The quartz tubes sit in holders we’ve machined to be incredibly precise. Why? Because we want to stop “wicking.” That’s when water clings to a wire and hitches a ride straight into the socket. By stopping the water before it can pool, the heater stays on, even when the weather gets messy.
The Fog Problem
Ever notice how a cold, damp breeze hitting a hot surface creates that annoying fog? On a heater, that condensation ruins the heat distribution. It blocks the infrared rays, and suddenly you’re shivering again. Our fix was a specialized anti-fog coating on the reflectors. It changes how the surface handles moisture. Instead of forming tiny droplets that block the heat, the water just spreads out into a thin, invisible film. You don’t see it, and more importantly, it doesn’t get in the way of the warmth.
The Balancing Act: Heat vs. Seals
Here’s the tricky part. If you seal a heater too tightly to keep the rain out, you trap the heat inside. If the internal components get too hot, the capacitors fry. So, we went with a “labyrinth” design for the chassis. It’s a clever bit of venting that lets the hot air breathe and escape, but makes it nearly impossible for rain to find its way in. Just a heads-up: when you’re installing these, make sure you leave a bit of room for that airflow. Your heater will thank you by lasting years longer. It’s simple. We built these to handle the elements so you can actually enjoy your patio without worrying if the heater is going to flicker out the moment a cloud rolls in.
